RITA DE RUYSSHER

Rita De Ruysscher was born in Belgium and at a young age, emigrated to Canada with her family. From an early age, she loved languages, and was trilingual by the time she was eight. This led her to study languages in CEGEP and university, and she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Translation from the Université de Montréal in 1978. However, she was also interested in art and would spend many evenings drawing.

Since her retirement in 2001, she has taken up watercolour painting. She is mostly self-taught but has also taken numerous watercolour workshops with well known artists from the Société Canadienne de l'Aquarelle, as well as other artists from the West Island. This has enabled her to explore the intricacies and the magic of this unpredictable medium. Furthermore, in order to hone her drawing and observation skills, she has also joined a Life Model Drawing group which meets every week.

Watercolours fascinated her with their transparencies and luminosity, pastels enthralled her with their punches of colour and their vibrancy. Also, they so elegantly combined drawing and painting techniques. She has recently decided to take the plunge and try out this technique. She is quite intent on gaining some proficiency in this medium and has, therefore, taken some workshops with the Montreal Fine Arts Museum and renowned local and international pastellists.

Rita loves to share through her paintings her passion for travelling, flowers, nature and architecture.

As well as being a BAA member, she is also a member of the Kirkland Artists' Association, the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada, and is an Associate Member of the Society of Canadian Artists.

***************************

I prefer painting scenes with striking topographic expression and color, especially if there is an interplay of light and shadow. I enjoy the challenge of capturing the illumination of sunlight on natural surfaces and features. I am a member of the Beaconsfield Artists Association. As well as painting, my hobbies include photography and astronomy.
